Annual General Meeting and Special Lecture
This year marks the 175th anniversary of Irish Famine migration to Canada. Join author and historian, Professor Mark McGowan, as he shares his work Death or Canada: The Irish Famine Migration to Toronto, 1847. Discover the impact this historic event had on the city and hear stories of the men and women who made the perilous sea voyage to Canada.
Dr. Mark McGowan is a Professor of History and Celtic Studies and the Interim Principal of the University of St. Michael’s College for the 2020-2022 academic years. Dr. McGowan is an historian renowned for his work on the Catholic Church in Canada and the Great Irish Famine, as well as the lasting impact that the Famine’s mass migration had on Canada.

Join Us for Jane’s Walks!
Join us on Sunday, May 8th at 10AM for our Jane’s Walk Three Centuries of Corktown.
Corktown, one of Toronto’s oldest areas, retains a rich stock of heritage buildings including churches, schools, theatres, and the site of the first Parliament buildings.
The name Corktown refers to the Irish immigrants who lived here in the 1800s, many of whom embarked from Cork.
Corktown stretches from Berkeley St. to River St. and from the south side of Shuter St. to Lakeshore Blvd. Vestiges of 19th century workers’ housing and remnants commercial and industrial activity are still visible but Corktown has undergone substantial change as new residences and businesses and cultural venues transform the area.
This 90 minute walk is open to the 30 registrants. PLEASE CLICK HERE TO REGISTER.
- Walk Start Location: Enoch Turner Schoolhouse at 106 Trinity Stree. The Walk Leader will be at the front door of the schoolhouse
- Nearest Public Transit: TTC King Streetcar stop at Parliament Street.

Begin the evening with a reception, hors d’oeurves and cash bar. Followed by a mouth-watering, four course, traditional Canadian Christmas dinner with wine catered by award-winning enVille Event Design and Catering. Enjoy seasonal reading, carol singing fun, and live performances.
Our emcee for the evening is Canadian radio icon and actor, Barbara Budd. The Heritage Champion awards will be presented to Michael Meighen, cultural patron, and Michael Enright, well-known CBC-Radio host.
*All Covid protocols will be in place including proof of full vaccination by guests and staff, masking, the number of guests reduced from full capacity and seated at tables of four or six with physical distancing.
